Well, we're all overlooking the root of the problem. "Palestine" and the leaders of the "Palestinians." Who, exactly, are they? The West Bank was part of Jordan until it was captured by Israel in the 1967 war. And Gaza was under Israel's control for quite some time, during which it flourished. Israel withdrew completely in 2005, and life for the "Palestinian" residents of Gaza has gone downhill since. Does anyone have any record of "Palestinians" or "Palestine" before, say, Arafat came on the scene (IIRC that was in the 1960s at the earliest)?

Nothing but nothing will change the viewpoint of HAMAS, as stated under the control of Israel, Palestine thrived but as soon as Israel bowing to popular world opinion did exactly what the so-=called Palestinians wanted pulled out it has gone downhill.
In Israel many religions prosper and have FREEDOMS something that is denied to Palestinians thanks to the HAMAS control .

I don't understand why the college kids are raising such a fuss. Hamas cannot be bargained with. Their goal is to eliminate Israel and wipe it off the map. Nothing else will satisfy them. Israel is doing the right thing by eliminating Hamas because that is the ONLY answer.

Most posts on this thread have valid arguments, the problem can only be solved with goodwill, and that is a commodity in short supply.

Hamas don't give a fig about the Palestinian people, they see the carnage and use it as propaganda. There are undoubtedly some good Palestinians but no good people in Hamas.

Iran does not give a fig about the Palestinian people, they pour support into the conflict to throw petrol onto the conflagration due to their blind hatred of Israel.

Israel does not give a fig about the Palestinian people with their dispraportunate decimation of Gaza.

There are no well intentioned people influencing this conflict, neither Muslim nor Jewish. The West is trapped, they cannot allow Israel to to lose, but cannot control their excesses.

Sadly a tragedy we can only stand by and watch in horror.

Genocide? Here's the definition of "genocide" from the Oxford Learner's Dictionary:

​the murder of a large number of people from a particular nation or ethnic group, with the aim of destroying that nation or group

Israel isn't trying to destroy the Palestinian people, to whatever extent a separate and distinct Palestinian people even exists, it's trying to destroy Hamas. Compare to Hamas, the stated purpose and intent of which is to eliminate all Jews.

I think that perhaps the ICC has lost or overlooked the intent part of the definition of genocide. Here's the ICC definition:

. . . any act with the intent to destroy a national, ethnic, racial, or religious group . . . .

Israel's intent has been and continues to be to destroy Hamas, not the "Palestinian" people. That Hamas embeds itself in the civilian population and fights from within the civilian population isn't Israel's fault.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out.
