Veterinarian and Euthanasia

Post by LoneTraveler » October 2, 2024, 3:54 pm

Hi I did a search on the above topic and only found an old post dated 2018. I am familiar with AEC Vet but they have added new Vets since then. I have an older dog recently diagnosed with late stage cancer but is doing well in terms of quality of life but I know cancer can advance quickly and although I was referred to a cancer clinic for animals, I do not want treatment such as Chemotherapy (nasty side effect) just to extend his life for a month at best. Is anyone aware of a Vet who will end pain and suffering when quality of life diminishes to a point this procedure needs to be performed? Thank you in advance

When my old Labrador (14 year old) could not walk anymore and we had to get pampers for her I asked the Vet where she had always ben treated to put her down.
This was the Vets on the east ring road. The Animal Hospital.
They said they would not do it so I asked if they new a Vet who would do it & they gave me an address of a vet who did .
I do not have the details of this vet as it was a few years ago but if you asked your vet if they know someone who does it the may put you in contact with them.
I am sure all the vets know who will do this humane injection.

The Buddhist tenet of not killing a living creature isn't just restricted to euthanzing a sick animal. It also applies to animals where surgery might improve their quality of life yet due to age or medical conditions that animal might die under general anesthesia. I have an elderly dog with recurring eye cycsts or meibomian gland blockages. The cysts grows up over the front of the eye from the lower lid blocking vision. Two vets would not do the excision surgery stating fears of the dog dying under anesthesia. One of them had done it 2 years ago to the same dog. So, a 3rd agreed to do it and the dog is now home with a better quality of life...

Hi FrazeeDK and Pal52 Thank you for sharing your experience. The Vet at AEC does surgery. He performed surgery on 2 of my dogs (one young and one old). He was concerned about the anesthesia on the older dog so he gave minimal dose. They both came out of it fine and are doing well. The vet appears to be compassionate and caring and I will be discussing Euthanasia (when the time comes) with him for the older dog at our next visit, this month. I may have misunderstood his view concerning Euthanasia last time I spoke of it one year ago when we were discussing heart issues of the older dog. Thanks again.
