Nothing stopping them doing that now - so why haven't they? Better they put up transmitters, though.

Another way to think about it - if both closed down tomorrow, very few people would give a shi.t.

On the other hand, if the government announced they were defunding the ABC, the country would be in an uproar.

Even funnier is the fact that the Directors don't decide the nominees or the winners. The current judging panel, that does, has 3 ABC members out of a panel of 16.

Congratulations to the ABC for taking a deep look at its internal culture around racism, and vowing to do something about it. Not in your widest dreams could you imagine a Murdoch organisation doing the same. Or the other commercial news organisations for that matter.

Well I was wrong to a certain extent about another commercial news organisation have a good hard look at itself - in this case, not focussed on racism, rather on a different scourge - bullying and sexual harassment.
