I was in Central yesterday......did 4000 steps circling the floors....didn't see any hint of a license office.

The office underneath AEK is open in that I saw people using it while I was upstairs on other business. I am not sure if they are doing tests and license renewals though as there's all sorts of other vehicle-related business they do apart from those.

As previously pointed out in these license threads the short drive out to Nong Han is well worth the effort. Quick and efficient service.

Whenever I leave matters up to Her Indoors, a curved ball from outfield usually comes in.
I want to get a Thai driver licence, and thought I would make enquiries with the crowd liked here.'
The missus kindly said she would ring, and next thing I am being told that its 8000bt and I need a yellow book, or passport, and a letter from Immigration..
I already have a Kiwi licence and an IDP,
what a yellow book and do I need a letter..

Two different offices on different floors but at the same, south end of the mall.

I'll be in Central later and will confirm what floors they are on (if they're still open).

The driving license office is on the 2nd floor and inside the multi-function government office. It was 4 pm when I had a look and deserted so no idea if it's still doing DL's.

The passport office is on the 3rd floor, pretty much above the DL office and at 4 pm, still had about a dozen folk waiting and two service windows open.

You also need a doctors 'fit to drive' certificate about 100 baht. Most clinics will do them.

Other issues - you need to do online testing and then get an appointment to do reaction and colour / sight test and for them to take a photo for the licence. be warned that at the Udon transport office south of Udon (and many other branches) there is a backlog of applications, 3 months wait for the purple palace at Nong Soon.

I am off to Phen tomorrow to get my licence as they had a short waiting list.

I stopped in to inquire today at that office. They do not do drivers licenses (issue or renew).

Amazing how many tightwads won't part with $40 for an international licence when visiting and intending to drive there.
Considering the possible consequences, a no brainer.

Re: Thai driving license - International Driving Permit

Post by deankham » December 16, 2024, 6:29 pm

Does anyone know how a thai person with a thai driving licence gets an international driving permit (IDP) from outside of thailand.

My wife needs an IDP so she can drive in the US when we go in early 2025. She has had an IDP several years ago but she got that in person from the Transportation office on the KK road.

She wants the same type of IDP but we are currently in the UK with no plan to return to thailand before we will be moving to USA.

Any advice appreciated. I did notice some websites offering to do an IDP but it was not clear if these are genuine or not.

Thanks
