US presidential pardons have always been a strange power given by the founding fathers very much akin to a Royal pardon loosely inherited from the British oppressors back then. I suppose there were a few things the US modeled the constitutional details after when creating the first real constitutional federal republic and representative democracy.

In itself, it is not that surprising since Carter pardoned his brother, Clinton pardoned his brother, hell Ford even pardoned Nixon. Trump pardoned his son-in-law's father too in the first term. These pardon's are in the news for a cycle or two then forgotten generally. Note that Biden jumped on AirForce One with his press secretary in hopes of getting away from the Whitehouse press core for a few days.

The thing that smacks of wrongdoing is the smug way Biden and his press secretary said emphatically and with great disdain to reporters when asked that this would MOST CERTAINLY NOT happen.

I suppose the holier than thou attitude needs a little humility thrown in the mix now.

If you want to see some really funny hypocrisy on the democrat side, watch this:

"The president of the United States is authorized by the U.S. Constitution to grant a pardon for a federal crime. The other forms of the clemency power of the president are commutation of sentence, remission of fine or restitution, and reprieve. A person may decide not to accept a pardon, in which case it does not take effect, according to a Supreme Court majority opinion in Burdick v. United States. In 2021, the 10th Circuit ruled that acceptance of a pardon does not constitute a legal confession of guilt, recognizing the Supreme Court's earlier language as authoritative.

Under the Constitution, the president's clemency power extends to all federal criminal offenses, except in cases of impeachment. All requests for executive clemency for federal offenses are normally directed to the Office of the Pardon Attorney in the U.S. Department of Justice for investigation and review, but the president may bypass that office."

i wish the UM Trump haters would give the guy a chance .. the American people have spoken so lets try and be positive, its not like theres a 2.5 million signature petition for pushing for another election as in some other places.

DT and his fantastic appointments may well MAGA

DM
Lets face it DM, the Trump hatters lost and they have no idea how to handle it, nor do they have any comprehension of why they lost.

The vast majority of the so called Political Experts on this forum, many of who are not even from the USA, who vehemently forecast the prophecy of a Biden-Harris and then a sure Harris-Walz landslide outcome, for the next four years, now have to face the reality or a Trump-Vance for 4 years followed by a GOP X-Y for another 8 years after that, thanks in part to the latest JB-Hunter pardon.

If I were Trump, I would seriously consider pardoning all Republicans jailed in the past four years during the Biden-Harris era and then ask the AG and State prosecutors to look closely into the Pelosi - Biden families and relook at Hillary for good measure.

I suspect their are other ghosts and other crimes in the Biden family closet and I don't think Joe can pardon all of them, as the list may be too long for Joe to remember. Even Hunter must have violated some State laws.

But that is me
That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind.

I don't actually hate Trump - to use the Australian vernacular, I just reckon (based on plenty of evidence) that he is a grub of a human being.

And based on that, I never cease to amaze how he was elected in 16, but more so this year.

Did you read Pots's insightful post above?

MAGA Crisis Could Mean There Is No Trump Inauguration on Jan. 20

With Mike Johnson’s speakership in peril, lawmakers worry the House won’t be able to certify Donald Trump’s re-election victory.

"If the election isn’t certified by Jan. 20, the Constitution is clear that Biden’s term has ended, taking him and Vice President Kamala Harris out of the line of presidential succession. The speaker of the House would be next in theory, but since that position would be empty too, it would pass to the Senate president pro tempore, the majority party’s most senior senator.

That would be Senator Chuck Grassley of Iowa. Speaking of whom, has anyone checked on Grassley lately? The lawmaker turned 91 in September."

It appears the Tangerine Insurrectionist has changed his mind about his previous attempt to ban Tiktok in the USA.
Donald Trump wants the Supreme Court to delay a potential ban on TikTok in the US until after he takes office, so he can pursue a "political resolution" to a stand-off between the app's Chinese parent company and the US government.
https://www.abc.net.au/news/2024-12-28/ ... /104768038
I wonder if only hand-wringers would try and connect that 180-degree turn to the nearly US$100 million Trump and the Republican Party have received since the beginning of the year from one of Tiktok/ByteDance's largest investors, the US billionaire Jeff Yass.

Not all US voters are stupid. They recognized that Trump was a much better choice than airhead Kamala. Even senile Uncle Joe would have been a better choice than Kamala. Joe hasn't run the country for the past several years. The government was controlled by far left liberals who did a lot of damage. Voters recognized that also.

I'm not a big Trump supported but have to admit that I am impressed by his ignoring people from the DC swamp and his supporting term limits. Appointing two very successful businessmen to eliminate government waste was also a great idea. I am no longer ashamed to be a US citizen.

No idea, but maybe same-same Jeff Yass (who owns about $21 billion worth of ByteDance stock).

Ohhhhhhhh noooooooo.........not Ginni Thomas as well??

"It really seems like this coterie of billionaires and their benefactors are all sort of entrenching and reinforcing each other's power and privilege. If that is not an oligarchy, I'm not sure what is,"...

PS: He's not talking about Biden and his coterie either.

Common sense prevails? Meh...

After openly criticizing him and supporting calls for his ouster, it looks like the president-elect has done a complete one-eighty and has issued an unequivocal endorsement of House Speaker Mike Johnson.

Much is being made about the recent close-call on the vote on federal government funding, where the perpetual can of a shuttered government was kicked a few months down the road, being the reason for this reversal.

I'm confident that the fact that a Speakerless House cannot ratify the election results, thus denying Trump's inauguration, has absolutely nothing to do with his sudden volte face. Nothing whatsoever.

pretty much. Those three could have really messed things up. Now we'll see if Johnson supported by Trump can "whip" the Republicans into a political coherence that usually only the Dems pull off.. To get anything done politically is going to take all the Repubs to support it..
