The answer is simple its in your passport.
You will have a stamp which says 'permitted to stay until ....'
If it is (as I think) for 90 days - since you entered , then yes you will have to leave and then re-enter and therby getting another 90 days stay. You continue doing this until the visa expires (1 year) - or you get an extension or convert to a retirement visa.
So when are you 'permitted to stay' until ?
quick introduction and query

From all the information you've given, I think what you have is a:
"Non-Immigrant Type O Multiple Entry Visa", valid for one year. Yes, you must leave the Kingdom every 90 days or ask for a extension. You may ask for a 30 day extension (1900 baht) or a one year extension (1900 baht). If you ask for the one year extension (commonly mistaken and referred to as a "retirement visa"), you will need to submit some documentation: health, address, income, bank info, etc. The rules change frequently, for example when I applied for my first "one year extension", I was asked for two copies of my documentation, this year only one copy of everthing. When I first moved here you needed 800,000 baht in the bank. Now all you need is a minimum 60,000 baht per month income (verified by documentation from your embassy, keep a copy of the original, as immigration will accept your original documention from you embassy for years). I go to immigration every 90 days to report my address, and once a year I renew my "one-year extension".
Now that we've got you totally confused, you might want to check this site out: www.pattayacityexpatsclub.com. They regularly have immigration officials speak at their meetings. Also, if the officials at Nong Khai aren't that savvy about all this, you might consider coming to Pattaya or Bkk. once a year for your "one-year extension". I have friends who have moved away from Pattaya, but still return once a year to do their "one-year extensions".
One more thing, in a previous post on this topic, I stated immiration official went to AEK Udon Hospital once a month or something like that. I can't remember where I read it, but I did read it somewhere. Sorry.

I think the visa you got in the UK will turn out fine, you just need to talk to a savvy English speaking immigration official. If you are still going to be in Chiang Mai on Tuesday, 6 Dec., you might take the time and visit the immigration office there. I had some dealings with that office 6 years ago, and found them to be very helpful.aj wrote:ok, thanks again , in Chaing mai at moment on return to udon will make haste to imigration office .and try and sort it out. . Just what was point of applying for retimrent visa in the uk I, left wondering ? lot of work and expense for nothing it seems .
