Thai election forces 2-weekend booze ban - Dry Season starts

Post by MAD » December 13, 2007, 7:53 am

BANGKOK: -- No alcohol will be served to expats, tourists or local residents in bars and restaurants over the next two weekends nationwide due to the oncoming election.

The first dry days will be 14, 15 and 16 December, pre-election days for a few million Thais who registered to vote early.

no alcohol is allowed to be served nationwide between Friday 14th at 6pm until Sunday 16th at midnight.

Elections on the 23rd will mean no alcohol will be sold from 6pm on the 22nd till midnight on the 23rd of December.

Practically this means two or three dry days in the two weekends ahead, although some tourist areas tend to be lenient once it's past 7pm on election day.

Please be aware that local rules could apply. Big hotels are not likely to be affected.

Does anyone actually know the origin of, or reason for this strange custom?
Is it also practised in other countries?
I used to love election (erection) day when I lived in los and always tried to discuss any upcoming erections, sorry elections, with adult students. Small things will amuse the small mind of a bored teacher of English.

In the US, no alcohol sales while election polls are open.
Normally 6.am to 6 or 7 pm
Then it's balls to the wall

i live in New Jersey and it isnt a State Wide Law, my Area doesnt go by that Law
and i dont remeber it being illegal in Fla.

it is not a Federal law, it depends on the State

Yep Kenn, It is definately by state. Hell i have lived all over the states, and in most of them it isn't even brought up ( of course i am from the south so getting the beer from a redneck with a gun is kinda tricky)
But in most of the other states that i have been in i have heard some about it, but was never effected by it, But now that i stopped drinking, when i move to Udon Permanently the only effect it will have on me is knowing that Roy will want me to hide a few away for him when he sneaks away from the wife for a bit.

The government doesn't want its citizens to get so drunk that they forget to vote, or forget who they sold their vote to.

Definitely in force over the weekend, albeit you could still buy beer. We stopped by the fairgrounds Saturday to buy some plants and have a bite to eat, I ordered a large Leo and was given it wrapped in a newspaper. "Keep paper on and not on table" I was asked.............
