Steve's Bar
By the tiny amount of postings for this bar and the lack of customers that I see there, is this bar on its way out?

TJ's, doesn't really have staff, except for the one gal, and unless you chit chat in thai, you won't be striking up to much of a conversation......unless Ningh is out front, rare, but she'll yak it up with you, very pleasant, and the better half yaks it up with who ever is out front. agree, haven't been to steve's too much lately, a bit gloomy and not attentive. was my steak pie stop until # 1 steve too over at irish clock. i seem to follow him around for that pie and attentive service.
I have been coming to Udon about twice a year for the last 7 years as my wife and I have business in the area and the UK. Steve's was the main bar and restaurant we went to due to its location and its 'local pub' feel. It had a good vibe with the expats and Steve (the original one there) and his wife were always working, and friendly with the clientele. When Steve sold up and moved into car rental and property I went along to get to know the new owner but to my disappointment he seemed to think talking to me was beneath him. That was a couple of years ago and I have never entered the place again.
However, luckily for me my presence and my money are accepted and encouraged in all the other bars.
SB's loss.

An exception to your observation, the new Steve came over and struck up a little conversation when In was in there a few months ago.
I suspect that you guys are going out of your way to be negative. Steve's isn't quite a party place, but when in there, I have seen a steady stream of tourists and locals enjoying their meals and service.
If this thread is an opportunity to pick on Steve's, I would only say this: The wait staff has to be a little more creative. They can't imagine any of the tasty curries on the menu being prepared without meat (this, from your resident vegetarian).
I'll continue to visit Stever's as one of my preferred restaurants in Udon.
And when I need a rental car or taxi service, I remain loyal to the "original Steve".

Negative where negative is due. Just sharing my experience. If I want rudeness from a bar owner I do not need to fly to Thailand to get it. There is copious amounts of that in the UK. From my own experience in customer related business, be nice to the customer because you want them to return and spend more money. I, as a customer will spend my money where I feel it is appreciated.
If people want to go there that's up to them. But for me there is a big difference in the Steve's Bar atmosphere to what it was with the original owner. My money now goes elsewhere.

Steve's Bar for me is a real institution. My name scribbled on my band of sangsom up on the shelf gave me a sense of belonging and quiet wet season nights chatting with steve1 and me mates made it my home away from home for the couple of years i lived in udon. I made my best udon frienships there with legends like chubby dave, scouser bob, welsh brian and foggy to name but a few. I left udon at about the time of the change over to steve2 but have always returned to steve's when in town. Like many i drifted to the irish clock when steve1 and mali began managing that pub. Steve's may have suffered as a result of the explosion of other farang dining and drinking options in udon but I hope it continues and is still in operation next time I am in town. I also consider steve2 a good mate and an old school man and hope he and his place share a healthy future.
Watch Me!!
hey Ive eaten at Steves a hundred times and never had a crook feed but as life goes on and things change so will everthing else including me and you..we'll change beer's and food preferances and lets just go with ,,with whatever you call it
just sayen Steve hasn't seen the last of me..(poor bugger) zac

It's Horses For Courses As They Say!
Steve & Mali (Now at the Irish clock) were always going be a hard act to follow for the present owners! (Also Steve & MalI).....confusing isn't it?
Having said that the venue was hardly buzzing when they had it!
But the food was then & remains till this day very good quality & certainly good value for money!
Over the past 4 years or so i along with my family have also patronized the bar hundreds of times & as yet as far as far as i recall never once had cause to complain!
The atmosphere in Steve's (Or the lack of it as some would put it) Suits me just fine!
After all I'm there to dine! nothing more & nothing less!
I certainly don't require the "Hello Handsome Man!" ....... "Where You Come From?" Bollocks!..... that's for sure!
I think the main difference since the present owners took over is the wives & in particular their individual personalities along with the way each operates!
(Mali 1 "Now Irish Clock") is very business minded, was a hard taskmaster with the girls & staff generally & is by nature quite pushy!
Whereas Mali whom now operates the place is much more placid & laid back by nature!
I have always found both to be very pleasant & attentive to customers needs & requirements, but with vastly different & contrasting styles!
Perhaps neither of the ladies were/are ideal for a venue such as steve's bar!
For me at least!
Mali 1 Ideal Position = Gogo Bar Mamasan in Patpong/Soi Cowboy/Nana/Pattaya/Phuket etc etc etc.
Mali 2 Ideal Position = Cafe/Restaurant owner serving high tea's in Eastbourne/Cleathorpes/Morecambe/Lytham St Annes/Folkstone etc.
I wish both couples the best of luck at their respective venue's!
Merry Xmas & Happy New Year to you all!

Just do not have the cheese on toast there
I've eaten at Steve's many times over the past 2 years. Their pork chop is one of my favorite meals in Thailand (love the mashed potatos and gravy), and the spaghetti is good too. My GF loves their Tom Yum. =D>
Never have any problems with the service. Little Tai is a hoot and always takes good care of me and my tilac. I think I've only seen the owner a couple of times. He's had some pretty serious health problems lately, bad back I think.

I've been eating at Steve's for the last 4 years [along with a lot of other places ] and have nothing but good things to say about Steve and his lovely wife Moo. The Cottage Pie with mash and vegies is a real stomach settler for me and you'll find me there at least twice a week when in town. Steve is a very quiet man of the old school and once you get to know him you will always feel welcome when back in town.Come to think of it, I could do with one of those Cottage Pies right now
