I changed from my expired 1 year Thai licence, approx 3 months ago, In Udon and took just my yellow book, photos, and passport.
Took my friend who is a senior teacher at Udon Tech with me in case of translation issues, the girl at the desk spoke good eng No rental agreement, no letter from Immigration, needed,
Only issue , was they cant accept the same picture from ur 1 year licence if u supply that one for the 5 year licence. That took 30 seconds to find 2 new ones.
done and dusted in 30 mins.

Apparently the yellow book may be used in lieu of the Immigration letter, it worked for me as well.
Forget about taking pictures. DLT does it now when they take your money.papaguido wrote:wazza wrote:I changed from my expired 1 year Thai licence, approx 3 months ago, In Udon and took just my yellow book, photos, and passport.

The new 5 year driver's license does not have your address on it. It has the driver's license number, issue date, expire date, your name, birth date, and passport number, in both Thai and English. Also where it was issued, in this case, Udon Thani.BKKSTAN wrote:I have renewed my DL twice and never had to present a letter of residence after the initial license.I still have my old bangkok address on my DL!I renewed both times in Bangkok although I was living here the last renewal.
I understand should they ever swipe your new card thru a reader, it supplies them with more info.
Re: Renew drivers License AEK Udon
I renewed my 5year driver's license today for another 5 years. It was due to expire on 25 Feb. I got my medical certificate at the Chai-ga-sam Hospital, about 600m up the road from AEK, same side, as you're heading toward Makro. Cost 60 baht.
The AEK office opens at 10. Lady there told me I had to go to Noonsoon because all license renewees now have to watch an hour-long video and the AEK office doesn't provide that service. I gave the folks at Noonsoon a copy of my yellow house paper, a copy of my old license, and a copy of my passport photo page along with a copy of my current visa (they didn't ask for these papers, so don't know if they were all necessary). Sure enough, I had to endure a video, luckily already in progress. As you'd expect, a few tear-jerker stories about driving-gone-bad.....but I was called out after 30 minutes to have my photo taken. No need to bring your own photos any more....they do them on the computer (smart card). I was out in just under an hour.....cost for 5 more years 655 baht (I think the license is 550 baht and the charge for the smart card is 100).
Don't know how long they'll continue to require the video viewing, but since the video is an hour long, you'd best arrive before 11-ish or after 1, as they take an hour long lunch break.
All in all, pretty pain free.

Re: Renew drivers License AEK Udon
Hi,
Anyone know the procedure when your drivers license has expired by more than 1 month. Was having a look at it last night. Are we supposed to get reminders / bills when expirey is approaching. Have not changed address.

I imagine if a hundred baht note was to get stuck in the paperwork somewhere (accidentely of course) you should have no trouble
Re: Renew drivers License AEK Udon
Of course, why did'nt I think of that. Made it much faster when I first applied for a license.Aardvark wrote:I imagine if a hundred baht note was to get stuck in the paperwork somewhere (accidentely of course) you should have no trouble

No renewal is sent to ur address, it is ' Up to You " to renew it, same as the car.
Only things I ever get a renewal notice for are the car insurance with IMG, and my international travel insurance policy from NZI.

Thanks Wazza, if the sticky 100b note does'nt work, I might have to start all over. Not looking forward to that although I do have to pay a visit to immigration in the not to distant future.

Medical certificate is required.
You will also need your passport or yellow book, as they will use the ID number to put on the license.
I may have missed something - others can add as required.

Thanks you for that, my wife was telling me I did not need the Medical Certificate, I was not so sure.

You will certainly need to show the medicate certificate + either the residence certificate, a yellow house book or a valid work permit and as I heard - you now have to listen to some sort of video or whats or ever even on the renewal of the driving license. Yet to be confirmed, the waisted time to be spend for watching the video!

I am confused by recent posts here re. what you need to renew a 5 year Thai D.L.
2 days ago I asked the lady at AEK Udon D.L. Office. (The following info is only for those of us who have a Yellow Book )
She told me:-
You can apply for a renewal 3 months before the old one expires.
You must go to the Regional main office (on the Khon Kaen road, approx 20 kms.)
You do NOT need a medical certificate.
You must bring your old D.L. (in my case, for car and motorcycle )
You must bring your Yellow Book.
You must bring your Passport and some copies.
You have to watch a video (about 1 hour )
You must take a colour blind test.
She speaks good English and assured me that was all I have to do.....trouble is,I am not convinced !
Can someone who has been there very recently to renew their 5 year D.L. please post their experience ?

Renew drivers License AEK Udon
Just got this information of a friend who renewed his license recently: he went to AEK to renew his license, was sent from there to Non Sung, the Land Transportation Office where he according to the information of AEK should watch a video. He brought his old license, residence certificate and passport - did not have to watch the video and did not have to pass a colour test. When his wife asked if he shouldn`t watch a video the lady at the counter said with a smile that he did not have to. Which means that generally people do but farangs don`t.
