way toooo expensive and too mut grief , something like 200%-300% import Taxes/dutys on cars i do believe depending on cc etc, check out the duty tables on the links, and they don't go by the value you put on the car...., plus shipping and customs clearance import permits and all the 'correct' paperwork are needed plus your status(visa) then you have to re-reg it in LOS "if" you are successful and meet all the criteria, but too much of a headache, vehicles are much cheaper nowadays in Thailand and virtually all models makes seem to be available.(and yes some newer ones are imported, but check out the prices !!)
I bet there are plenty of cars sitting in custom houses gathering dust whilst the importer and customs agree on dutys + paperwork.
some info here..Thai customs.

A guy I know who lives in Bangkok went through it all a couple of years back wanting to import his Aston Martin, its still in the UK as he was quoted, as mentioned above, something ridiculous like 250% of its value as import duty.
This is interesting from the asiatradingonline link above.
"If you are on a tourist visa or retirement visa you cannot import a car."
Tourist I can understand, but retirement, would have thought this is when you would like to import your beloved motor.........

If it's over 10 year old (I reckon Mang qualifies)... you get a big discount on the import duty... plus of course a couple of thousand $US for shipping...
might be worth looking into...
Would be good to hear that Dub of yours around town...

WHO IS ALLOWED TO IMPORT CARS TO THAILAND
The importers under the criteria listed below are eligible to import ONE used/ secondhand vehicles for personal use
1. Nonresidents & FOREIGNERS: Only those who are Nonresidents with non-immigrant visas issued by the Immigration Department and work permits issued by the Ministry of Labor to work in Thailand for at least one year at the time of importation are allowed to import motor vehicles to Thailand. If you are on a tourist visa or retirement visa you cannot import a car.
2. Thai Residents:
The Thai residents are divided into 2 categories:
1. Returning Thai residents working/studying/living abroad:
2. The permanent import of personal vehicles under this condition is allowed only when the vehicle is accompanied the owner on the change of residence and the importer have owned, possessed, and used the imported vehicles together with the valid driving license for at least one and a half year while staying abroad. Returning Thai residents marrying foreigners:
It is required that the importer have owned, possessed, and used the imported vehicle while staying abroad for at least one and a half year, from the date of transferring of ownership to the date of arriving in Thailand. In addition, a Marriage Certificate and relevant evidence indicating the change of residence to Thailand must also be shown to Customs.

not sure about the 'duty free' part though, would find it hard to believe that it was a 'no charge' experiance.

Everything you require to know about import duty is on the Thai Government site www.customs.go.th
Looked into it a couple of years ago.....average import duty is 200% unless is over 10yrs old as previously mentioned then you get a discount
I was thinking of shipping a Harley Chopper over,looked.... then thought again OK can ship in parts and re-build over here for about 7% import tax BUT if I want to register 100% I have to show where it came from, what it is worth etc etc and back to square 1 with paying the full import tax.Next plan...I have a 95" nissan patrol SGX ,petrol engine which I would love to have over here and convert to LPG so I thought maybe I could drive it here BIG NO!.....how many visa's just for the vehicle + the fuel bill...and again the Import Tax to make 100% legal 1 year?....I wanna stay as legal as possible due to my being a farrang
If you find a cheap way of doing this PLEASE TELL EVERYONE!!!!
