We (well, really my wife) own a house that is wood upstairs and concrete downstairs. We are going to tear the house down to make room for one of my wife's future projects, and we are going to sell the wood. The concrete part is junk, but the wood - both the floors upstairs and the boards outside look like they are in pretty good shape, especially considering that the house is probably more than 20 years old and suffered hugely from neglect.

We have had an offer from a broker for the wood, but since the offer fell short of our expectations, we decided to wait a while and see if we can find a better price.

Summary: Wood houses work fine, but I'll bet Ausiboy will tell you all the reasons why the wood should not be in contact with the ground.

I didn't care much for the concrete and brick style of building they do in Thailand so, I opted for light gauge steel framing and smart board cladding inside and out. The framing will be delivered in February and will take about a week to assemble. Snaps and screws together like a big erector set.

Perhaps you could post a few pictures of the work in progress and the completed structure.

It reminds me of a steel and wood building for sheltering horses that I helped construct long, long ago. As it was only meant to shelter a few horses during bad weather and to provide storage of feed and hay, it was open on one side and had no flooring, just dirt. There was a second-level loft above to store bales of hay. Small concrete bases, perhaps a foot square and 3 three feet deep, were poured with 2 or 4 embeded bolts each to secure the steel vertical posts. A template with holes was likely used to perfectly position the bolts in the each concrete base. I believe in this case all the top and side horizontal members, perlins, were welded to the posts, not bolted or screwed. The sheet metal roof, slanted without a peak, was attached with sheet metal screws to topside perlins. 8' x 4' sheets of exterior wood siding were attached using long sheet metal screws. Went up without a problem and was very sturdy IMO.

I'll get some photos posted as soon as I can get my computer online. As far as where it is being build....It is a small village about 2 or 3km south of hiway 22 going to Hong Han. I think the turnoff is across from the PTT station but, don't quote me on that. I'll have to ask my wife the name of the village. So far all that has been done, is the posts cast for the foundation. A little different from the way it is done in the States but, I guess it works.

The house is being built in Ban Nong Hin in the Nong Khon Kwang subdistrict. It's about 4km east of Big C and about 2km south of hwy 22. Attached is the drawing of the framing. It snaps and screws together and, no, there is no welding.

We are making a little progress. They have completed the foundation and basic floor. The metal framing will be delivered and erected in February. They built the foundation on stilts. Not exactly how I would have done it but, I'm just a farang, what do I know? I have been thinking about using copper pipe for the water supply line in the house. Anybody have any comments, good or bad? Have you had any experience with it in Thailand?
