iPod's
Need some help on iPod's.
My nephew's birthday is fast approaching and his Mum says he would like an iPod.............. I have no clue about these apart from basically what they do of course.
Does anyone have any expertise on iPod's, what should I look for, what size memory is a decent size etc.
Am I correct in thinking these are made by Apple? if so does this mean you need an Apple Mac to upload songs from.... see, I did say I have no clue.....

There is an Apple store on the 2nd floor of the Charoensri Mall called iBeat, which sells iPods. Also, you can purchase a generic MP3 player at other stores for a lot less. Any PC can be used to to download music. There are many models of iPods ranging from 1 GB to 160 GB. With iPods you have to use iTunes to download music. iTunes is not user friendly. The generic MP3 players are very user friendly. On the same floor at the west end there is a notebook PC store which sells MP3 players. Take a look and compare.
My wife has an 8 GB IPOD Touch, she can download movies, pictures and is also WIFI capable, allowing her to connect to the internet, plus many more features.
I think the smallest is IPOD Nano and only supports music files. You can download from any computer. You can download music online or from CD's. Also, there's an IPOD shop in the mall.

You do not need a Apple computer to use a ipod. I bought a 60GB ipod two years ago and am very happy with it, but if I didn't have some basic computer skills it would be difficult to figure out. Does your nephew have a computer or a friend with a ipod and computer that can help him? If not, I would look at mp3 players. These can be hooked up directly to a CD player to download the music from the CD directly to the mp3 player. The ipod will require fairly recent computer with windows vista or XP home, a usb port, a internet conection, and cd drive.
the ipod nano is 1GB and holds music only. All the others hold music and video. The ibeat store at the complex sells all the ipod models at almost twice the cost that you would pay in the U.S. (between 3,900 baht for the nano up to 16.800 for the ipod touch). The ipod nano holds up to 240 songs, the ipod classic 160GB holds up to 40,000 songs.
Here's the Apple web site:

You could google mp3 players to learn more about them.

No Apple Mac is not required. You can download the itunes program to any PC.Kudjap or Bust wrote:Papa,
Does your wifes iPod Touch need an Apple Mac? How many tracks can she get onto the 8GB, roughly speaking of course, and the big question........how much was it????
The 8GB IPOD retails for about 11,000-12,000 bt. Sorry I don't have a clue how many tracks it will hold. Here's a link with all the spec's.

Thanks Mr N
I have found a few websites to read through. My nephew lives in the UK, he has specifically said iPod as his frineds have them (have now asked his Mum to find out which models the friends have), they're all PC literate and he's got a new last year Toshiba Satellite which we bought for him, his 16th B/day.
Have been looking at the UK department stores websites and one of them shows the Nano as the following
"The iPod Nano 8GB has enough room for 2,000 songs or 7000 photos or 8 hours of video. And with 5 hours of video or 24 hours of audio playback time" Think this should be good enough for him but will wait to hear back from Mum....
Thanks for the info, things are becoming clearer

With the world being iPod crazy it is worth checking the alternatives. My daughter had an iPod (small one forget what is was called) and she had lots of trouble with it and then it died. I bought her a Samsung for her birthday 2 years ago and she still uses it. Plug it in and drag and drop from her MP3 folder on her pc, easy peasy. I think the dog got the iPod. I was going to buy one at Christmas but would have bought a Sony or Phillips. Samsung and Creative Labs make nice one also.
A few weeks back I fancied a new mobile phone so opted for a Nokia N70 Music Edition with 1GB memory that holds 700 songs... That is plenty for me. Also 2.0 Mega pixel camera. Happy enough with it.

Was also researching recently, was so partial to the Creative Zen Vision W 60 gb. I ordered one, then cancelled. It would be sort of an unnecessary expense and a bit redundant for me, though nice to have. But got laptop and mp3 already along with too many cameras and electronic. But nice to put in one small package.
Was 352 usd, had a mail in rebate for 50, so that would of brought it down to 302, very nice price www new egg com site, from states though.
Lots of nice features and removable/replaceable battery when the time comes.
Do shop around, price vary greatly, along with features and available sites to download from.

nice big touch screan you can download movies and around 2000 songs thats plenty. Very easy to use the quickest phone that ive learnt after motos, nokias, samsung and the rest.
the main thing you get an ipod in your phone so two in one unless you want to store 40000 songs i would go for an iphone.
