Memory Upgrade

My desktop PC only has 128 memory and I want to run video on it, video telephony to be precise, the processor is 1.1G and I'm told should be good enough. I bought a new memory strip (512) to add to the 128 already in the PC. How do I add it, do I just clip it into the spare slot or is there a lot of other stuff I need to do....

Any help would be good before I open the case.

If your laptop has 2 slots for the memory sticks, just pop it in. Nothing else to do but turn on computer.

Thanks Pop's, it's actually for my desktop but nerver mind. OK I've done the deed and rebooted the PC. All seems Ok and is working, when I right click on 'my computer' on desktop and look at the 'properties' it shows 504MB of RAM, I had 128 originally and have now added another 512, is there something wrong????

Hi Guys,

Another newbie here !

You will find that putting in a different value RAM chip will make your computer look at the highest value chip, to increase the RAM memory even further you need two sticks of RAM of equal value !!

Certainly does thanks, 512Mb is good enough for video telephony - just tried it to Australia. Before with 128mb it was jerky and blocking, now it's reaonably smooth, will consider buying another 512Mb and remove the 128 later.

No Problem !! You might also want to look at your graphics card, as it may not be powerful enough, depending on what you are trying to do with it.....

I take it that your computer is quite old ????

In time you might want to consider upgrading to a new model as your old one cannot be upgraded past the basic upgrades.

For your information I have and run a PC with 2.8ghz quad core processor (4 times 2.8ghz), 4 gb of RAM (4 sticks of 1 gb)and 1 gb on my graphics card !!

I also have 500 gb hard drive internal, with 1 700gb external hard drive and 1 terrabyte ext hard drive, the external hard drives saves you space on your PC , I deal for storing all your photos and important documents.

I've done a test video call to a friend in Australia and all is now good enough. I'm fixing this machine up so the wife and her family can use it for video chats with the rest of the family in the UK and Australia and some friends in the US. It is an old one as you rightly say, only 1.1Ghz processor.
My office PC is the all singing all dancing machine, not as pwerful as yours though, along with my laptop,

Letigger, you a gamer or what!!!! Most of what you got is a gamer's dream machine. LOL
Letigger is right, the memory sticks have to be of the same value, you actually have 640 mb of ram. If you aren't a gamer, a video card of 256mb or 512mb will do fine for what you what to do. Just remember that the Internet here is Thailand is about 10 years behind once it's outside of BKK.

Not a gamer as such, I design add ons for Microsoft Flight sim, I also use the machine to upload such programmes and of course video calling.

Take your point as regards the slow speed etc etc in Thailand, I live part of the year in Phuket the other in London, In phuket they are upgrading the system to fibre optic link for the whole island,
This will be a testbed for the rest of Thailand if all goes well, but I guess it will take time to install (Thai Time !!)

Here in London the service is good 8gbs speed !! In Phuket I was getting 1 gbs if I was lucky !!

My video card is 256 Mb and, now, if I'm using 512 or 640Mb RAM it's certainly good enough for the video calls the wife and family will do, usually Skype or MSN.
Would it make very much difference if I swopped the original 128Mb for another 512Mb i.e. a total of 1024Mb?, for the video I mean given the video card is only 256Mb

Extra RAM in your machine will affectively give your machine more room to work, its just like having a bigger desk to work from so that the computer finds the information quicker and so speeds up the process.

Letigger I think you mean 1mbs and 8 mbs, I know I was getting 10mbs on comcast cable in US.....it's a difference of night and day. what takes 1 or 2 hours here is only about 10 minutes in US. Also the faster the CPU that better Internet experience, or at least I told that, never really seen a difference. I build custom gamers in US...that is why I asked about you being a gamer.

You are also correct as regards the speed of the CPU, Dual core and quad core machines really leave the rest behind now.

Using a Nvidia GeForce 7300 in one here, the newest of the computers I have here. Core 2 dual CPU. The kids run for it, especially if they Cabal Online, which I do. Have you ever checked out the liquid cooling system Alienware puts out????

well I am running 2 gigs of memory and 256 ram video card AMD processor with ADSL
and you know what my old dell with celeron processor 256 memory and dial up connection in AZ was almost as fast as my pc here in udon my next computer will be Imac with a dual core intel processor & 2 gigs of memory and I don't think it will be any faster than the one I am using to write this post
until Thailand get cable internet and fibre optics installed in the street this is the best we can expect
unless you go satellite then again if the morons don't know how to tune it then your screwed any way

Letigger, have installed that system in my last computer, a little cumbersome but it actually works pretty good. I have sensors on the CPU, HD, Video chip, 2 in the case (upper and lower). There were other chirps and bells added but the cooling systems was awesome....kept it running fast and clean.....all for a kid's Christmas. LOL

If I may impose just a tad, I have a question. I love M/S Flight Sim and have been running a copy of M/S F/S on a copy of XP without much trouble.

My question is: On the second harddrive in my computer I have an original Vista (starter series). Can I run a copy of M/S Sim using an original M/S Vista or will the software not allow a copied Flight Sim program to run.

Hi Issan !

No Problems, depends on what version of Flight Sim you are using. I will elaborate, Currently I use Windows XP SP3 with MS FS9.

If you have Windows Vista, you will be better off using FS X (Ten).

For both versions you will need the add on service pack for Flight Sim put out by Microsoft, If you are running a genuine copy thats ok, If you have a pirate copy you may not be able to get the updates.

For FS X you will need more RAM, as the system soaks it up !! I recommend 3 gig.

Finally your power supply wattage that you require is a cumulitive total of the wattage for each piece of equipment that it runs !
