Issan

Just had a thought are you downloading and installing extra aircraft and scenery ??

If you are then this will put more load on the Graphics card, also the more detailed you have the scenery set too the heavier the load !! But the realism is GREAT !!!

I lot of my scenery designs are incorporated within other peoples scenery (macros), I am also useful with AI (artificial Intelligence) for those who do not appreciate what this is, It is the ability to make thing move in a virtual world at random using formatted routes and variable routes, (sounds geekish and Heavy but highly satisfying !!), Just take a look at Grand theft auto for a start !!

BUT, for those who think I am a complete geek, you are wrong, its a way of earning a crust, For pure fun, theres nothing better than playing than getting a few beers in and playing Rock and blues guitar with my Band or friends !!

Is there anyway I can see the actual value of memory being used by the PC. meaning, before I posted that under 'my computer' 'properties' and 'hardware' it shows 504Mb, you explained that the PC will look at the highest value of the 2 memory sticks but does this mean it's only using the highest value memory stick or does it incorporate the 128Mb and the new 512Mb.

Letigger

Thank you for the info. Currently running XP S2 with MS 10 with all the features set at max. It runs OK.

Today or tomorrow I will install the pirate copy of MS 10 into Vista and see what happens. And yes, I need to upgrade to 3 or 4 GiGs of ram but that will (I believe) require a Main board upgrade. :(

Thanks again for the info Letigger.

Yes thats right, If you are going to do that you might as well replace the CPU as well.
Sometimes though its just as cheap to buy a new machine or have one built to your spec, as other factors come into play such as power pack, audio and graphics card etc etc.

MS 10 has some great features and new software becoming available all the time now, try loging into www.avsim.com for some great add ons that are FREE !

BKKSTAN .......................... Why More RAM is Better ?  http://www.computermemoryupgrade.net/wh ... etter.html  .........................................................................................................How Much Memory Do I Need ?

The answer really depends on how much and for what your system is used. Upgrading is easy and cost effective. RAM is used every time you open an application, download, play a game or simply turn on your computer. Additionally if you work with or plan to work with digital audio and video more ram is a necessity.

Novice User / Administrative
If you use your computer to send and receive email, do a little word processing, and are starting to surf the Web, you can get by with 64MB. However, you would benefit from going to at least 128MB of memory.

Basic User
If you are spending more time surfing the internet, sending and receiving email, and doing word processing along with other applications, you can get by with 128MB, but would benefit from going to 256MB.

Professional / Feel the need for Speed!
If you are running multiple business applications, want to play the newer video games and/or work with graphics, you can get by with 256MB, but your computer speed would benefit greatly by having 512MB.   http://www.computermemoryupgrade.net/ho ... -need.html

Donthani is basically correct, to understand what you need, you must first understand how the computer works and as donthani quite rightly says what you are going to do with it.

In Laymans terms

Basic principles are as follows:-
CPU or Processor = This handles the data within (just like a Brain) the higher the spec the faster it will process your programmes and information.

RAM (Memory) = Imagine your computer is your desk, if you have a small desk then things get cluttered, bigger desk the machine is able to spread the information around and ease the access and so speed up the process

Graphics card = This is a plug in circuit board that plugs direct into your mother board (hence plug and play) these boards can be basic or highly complex and some even have to have an additional power supply with cooling fan. They also have there own RAM.

Mother board = Is the main circuit board where all other devices are attached.

Generally speaking you will not need a high spec machine unless you are on line game player or use highly detailed scenery say within Flight Sim or something similar.

I hope this helps ! One last thing, I know pirate software is cheap and easily accessible in Thailand, sometimes it is best to buy the genuine software and some of the pirate stuff can corrupt your computer.

I just had my old computer upgraded today, more like gutted really.
With all this talk of slow computers I just thought I would chime in with an idea of a relatively cheap way of getting a new computer.
Took along the old machine to 108 IT Service, across the road from Molly Malones and had fitted-

Intel Duo Core CPU 2.40GHz
1G Ram
New Mother Board
New Cooling system
Nvidia GeForce 7200GS 256MB (Not a big gamer so more than enough)
New Switching Power Supply
New DVD/RW

All for the princely sum of 7,800baht which was UNDER 2,000baht the price they quoted me yesterday

Excellent service and the manager speaks good English, so no worries there.

So now my old machine is my new machine and the wifes sister has been informed she can only use the new, old machine, this baby is mine

sounds like a really nice price, especially for here.

think i paid more just for CPU and not as nice couple years ago, tho relative to how fast stuff is outdated.

Roy,

Sounds like a fair deal you got at 108. I also have used that store with success.

For those who feel comfortable enough upgrading, always check the prices of at least a couple of stores. Sometimes I buy at IT 108 and sometimes at the Hardware House in the complex.

The prices can vary up to as much as 30% buying the same product.

Has anyone had problems with either the Hardware House or the IT 108 store near Molly's? I'd like to know. If no one has had problems, I would feel safe recommending them to anyone.

Yes I have also used Hardware House in the past and never had any problems there either.
Both good shops and would use either of them again.
Just this time IT 108 came out the cheapest.

LA your right the price drops all the time even for more sophisticated technology, I also bought a Brother all in 1 printer for 2,300baht.
3 years ago I bought a Lexmark which looks ancient and does not compare with the quality of the new one for about 4,000baht!

Stan,
I haven't read all the replies to your post but this is what I was after doing more for video telephony than watching vidoes and it has done the trick. As my OP said, I originally has 128 Mb RAM, video was awful, have now added another 512 Mb and the video is now much much better, no staggering pictures and no delay......512Mb RAM for my machine cost 1,200 bht in the complex.......

hey stan, dont' buy any memory yet, i'm upgrading my 512 to 2gig next week, maybe, though very doubtful, my 512 will work with yours. if so, it's yours. i haven't even looked inside to see which one it is, jot down you make and model, by next meeting i should be done, unless you are in a hurry.

Guys
RAM is now in three formats DDR, DDR2 and now DDR3

Make sure you have the correct one as you can damage the mother board inserting the wrong RAM, DD3 have different width slot pins

All extra RAM put in machines has to be exactly the same vaue otherwise the higher value will over ride the lower.
Most machine have 4 RAM slots, you could put a dual mixture in that case for example 2 x 512 and 2 x 256

Hope the above is useful
:D

Stan,

You can try this site, click on Scan My System (you have to open with IE) and go from there. This will tell you what you have installed.

Paul (moderator) was providing upgraded computers to a local school some time ago and might be able to use it? I will have a monitor to donate when it comes back from repair place in Bangkok, as well.

Paul, you out there?
